How To Maximise Your Time As A First-Time Mum
Being a first-time mum is the most rewarding feeling in the world. It brings so much fulfilment, love, and happiness into your life.
It goes without saying that your life changes forever the moment your bundle of joy is born. Thereafter comes the tiredness, sleepless nights, and never-ending to-do list.
You will quickly notice your time isn’t as free as it used to be. No matter how long your newborn sleeps for, there is always something to do or sleep to catch up on. Your time feels restricted yet the list goes on and on.
While it might feel easier to let it overwhelm you and get dragged under into the sea of to-do list doom, there are ways to maximise your time, feel more organised, and get your life back together during the newborn stage (and thereafter).
Multitasking
Mums are superheroes. Hence, we aren’t short of the ability to multitask.
Those concerned how they can multitask while taking care of a baby are right to be. It can be challenging but when done right, you and your baby can be fulfilled.
A prime example of multitasking as a first-time mum is keeping your baby occupied while getting ready. It can be more difficult with a baby that cannot yet sit up as they find it harder to play with toys. But, play gyms are great for keeping them entertained.
You can pop them on the floor and keep their senses occupied while you manage to get ready and maybe even make yourself a coffee.
Rest when you need it
Nobody can run on empty. Although there will be many times you try to run on empty as a mum, it is tough. We need energy to stay organised, calm, and be the best mum we can be.
If you need a two hour nap when your partner gets home from work, don’t be afraid to ask for it. You can reset and maximise the time spent awake when you have more energy. Power naps are also great when your little one decides to settle down for a nap. If your fatigue is overriding your motivation to get things done, prioritise the sleep.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Never be afraid to ask for help. In the early days, you are running on next to no sleep and everything is new to you. It can be overwhelming.
Asking your parents, a friend, or your partner for a little help when you need it is nothing to be ashamed of. They will be more than happy to look after your little one while you get some rest, catch up on life admin, or have a well-deserved manicure.
Set certain days for errands/cleaning
It is safe to say that your schedule will not be as freeing as pre-baby times. You won’t be able to clean daily like you might have once enjoyed doing. It might be a struggle to fulfil your errands like before.
It is wise to set certain days for your tasks. Let’s say a Friday feels good to clean and pop out to the shops, do what is best for you. Then, you can stick to a routine and make time to complete your tasks without feeling overwhelmed by trying to fit them in when you have time. Trying to do too much daily will cause heavier brain fog and fatigue.
To-do lists
Baby brain doesn’t always stop when pregnancy is over. The hormones and tiredness combined can cause you to become forgetful.
Using to-do lists is great if you want to hold yourself accountable to get things done (when you have the time) and not forget to do important things.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself
Finally, carve out time for yourself. Your mind will feel calmer and more relaxed if you take time each week to do something for you. Whether you need a 30-minute solo walk or want to have an everything shower, do what you need to do to feel your best.
Rest and self-care will equate to a happier mum and more energy.
